You can do more than you think!
by Vigdis Lamberg
Do you have an overview of what you are actually capable of? What experiences—both formal and informal—have your activities given you? Many different kinds of roles in working life can benefit from transferable skills, including positions of responsibility, volunteer work, hobbies, and life experience.
In the course “From Job Seeker to Competence Seller”, you will receive an effective matrix that you will fill out yourself. This exercise will give you a useful overview and insight into all the roles you have had throughout your life. Through 11 lessons, you will also learn how to present and market your knowledge and experience in competition with many other capable people.
What are you good at?
Many people who take this course do so because they want to change jobs, while others find themselves needing to look for a new job as a result of downsizing. In the wake of increased digitalization, acquisitions, and restructuring, some jobs disappear while new ones emerge. Perhaps you need to highlight and sell other parts of your overall competence than the ones you have relied on until now.
Many people are unsure where to begin in this process, and it can feel as if they have to start completely from scratch: “Everything” has changed since the last time they applied for a job. Or perhaps they have actually never applied for a job before, but have moved from one position to another thanks to promotions, connections, and/or coincidences.
The job market is strongly characterized by tough competition, and more than 70% of jobs are never publicly advertised. More and more people change jobs more frequently, and there are many highly qualified candidates competing for the same positions. Employers often run three or four interview rounds, personality tests, case assignments, and presentations.
In such a situation, it is crucial that you as a candidate are clear about what you can do, what you can contribute, and what you are good at. Perhaps you do not have the formal education, but you have performed the work and achieved the results. That may be enough—when it is presented in the right way.
Formal and informal roles
Start your journey toward the job you truly want by mapping your competencies. This can help you discover, organize, and find the right words to describe your own skills. Many people have never reflected deeply on the roles they have filled over the years—under what circumstances they have worked, what they actually did every day, what knowledge they used, and what this reveals about their personal qualities. Remember that your informal roles also provide valuable experience, even if they involved unpaid volunteer work. There may be a great deal of valuable, marketable competence hidden there.
Unfortunately, I too often find that my clients have been advised to remove work experience that is considered “not relevant.” Below are some examples of “non-relevant roles” my clients have been advised to remove from their CVs, along with suggestions on how you can present and sell the value of these roles.
Petter: Football coach
“I was a football coach for a junior team when I was 14 years old. I benefited greatly from my experience as the oldest of four siblings and from my ability to motivate others. As a football coach, I truly developed my communication skills, something I have benefited greatly from ever since.”
Camilla: Care assistant
“Alongside my engineering studies, I worked as a care assistant at a nursing home. My goal whenever I went to work was to help make the residents’ day a little better. I benefited greatly from my interactions with the residents and developed my relational skills in this role.”
Ola: Bartender and waiter
“Alongside my studies, I worked as a waiter and bartender. In this role, I had to interact with many different types of people and help resolve conflicts that sometimes arose between guests. We received training in sales and upselling, as well as instruction in health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations. I was also responsible for cash reconciliation and closing duties. Through my interaction with colleagues and customers, I contributed to a positive environment and learned a great deal about communication.”
You should aim to leave the best possible impression. To achieve that, the person you are presenting your competence to needs enough information to form their own impression of you. With the CV template included in this course, there is no limit to how long a CV can be. The suggested format is shown on page 1, and we have designed that first page so it creates a strong and relevant impression of you within just a few seconds. The older and more experienced you are, the longer your CV will naturally be. Make sure they learn enough about you to consider you a relevant candidate, invite you for an interview—and ultimately offer you the job.
The online course “From Job Seeker to Competence Seller” teaches you everything you need to know to write the kind of cover letter that makes employers want to invite you to an interview.
