The interview that gets you the job
by Vigdis Lamberg
An invitation to an interview comes as a result of a strong CV and application. In the course “From Job Seeker to Competence Seller,” you will learn how to write a CV and application that make your next employer want to talk to you. The interview is the moment of truth. Will it be a match? Will it be a win-win situation?
“You only get one chance to make a good first impression,” says an old proverb. A major success factor lies in the preparation you do. In the course “From Job Seeker to Competence Seller,” you will gain insight into methods and useful advice on how to plan and carry out the interview that helps YOU get the job.
Preparation
You have already read quite a bit on the company’s website before writing your CV, application, or making a cold call. (How to make “cold calls” to companies you want to work for that have NOT advertised vacancies is also something you will learn in the course).
Now it’s time to review. Take note of your differentiators — what makes you unique — and practice a short version of your most important experiences for this specific position. Check the company’s values and vision. You do this first and foremost for your own benefit, so you can reflect on what these mean to you. But the company also expects that you have familiarized yourself with them, and increasingly, questions about values come up during the conversation. They want motivated employees, and a shared value foundation is crucial! You will also find information about projects and initiatives the company is working on, allowing you to ask relevant questions during the interview.
Search for news articles about the company and check the company’s social media profiles. In Norway, you can find a lot of financial information on Proff.no. If you live in another country, find out which public registers provide insight into company financial statements, including profitability. A company that has reported losses for many years should raise warning signals.
What is the dress code?
You only have a few seconds to create a first impression. It takes a lot to correct a poor one. If you feel yourself that things get off on the wrong foot, this contributes to increased nervousness. I never forget my own experience when I was younger, before information was easily available online. After a phone conversation with my potential future boss, I assumed he was an older gentleman in a suit. I showed up wearing a pleated skirt, silk blouse with a bow, and a pearl necklace. Then in walked a man in worn jeans and a T-shirt with a gold chain around his neck! I felt like “Old Aunt Sofie” and was completely thrown off during the first 10 minutes. The worst possible start to a sales conversation — which an interview really is. Do your homework! Learn as much as possible about the company. Spend time on their website; the photos will often give you a clue about the dress code.
The conversation
Memorizing potential interview questions and answers can become a source of stress and may prevent you from giving a genuine impression of who you are. What you should prepare is what you have to sell. Prepare yourself to present the optimal mix of education, experience, personal qualities, interests, and motivational factors that you believe match THIS company. If you have completed the 11 lessons in the online course “From Job Seeker to Competence Seller,” you have written down a number of success stories in the “Achievement Book.” You have become aware of the qualities you possess, examples of initiatives you have taken that led to good results, and how you are perceived by colleagues, customers, and employees. You have also been introduced to a simple model, the RASK model, which is a practical tool for handling situations where you are asked about a skill or personal quality.
Salary and pension
In this course, you will learn how to handle salary negotiations. You will also gain valuable insight into today’s pension schemes and become even more aware of how much elements other than salary can contribute to the total compensation package — such as insurance, pension plans, and other employee benefits.
WHY SHOULD WE HIRE YOU?
This is a question you can be absolutely certain you will be asked during the interview. After completing the course “From Job Seeker to Competence Seller,” you will have become highly aware of your competencies. You will have learned persuasive communication methods that enable you to answer this question with confidence and conviction — so that YOU are the one who gets the job.
