Your application is a sales letter!

The concept of an “application” is actually misleading. Because you are really a valuable asset to companies where unresolved work tasks match your skills and expertise! What we are really talking about is a proposal letter or a sales letter. From now on, I recommend that you think of it as a sales letter.
Avoid the essay trap
Many people experience discouragement and declining motivation when they sit down to write a persuasive letter for a job opening. Maybe you really want the job and know that you could do it very well, that you have the right qualifications and the right personal qualities — but how do you get that down into the Word document? How do you structure your message so that both your competence and your personality come across to the reader? Many people fall into the essay trap when writing an application/sales letter. We have learned that an essay should begin with an introduction, followed by a main section and a conclusion. That does NOT apply to an application/sales letter!

Make sure that your first paragraph answers the three most important things they are looking for:
- Why are you motivated for THIS job?
- Which parts of your education are especially relevant?
- What other experience do you have that can set you apart from the other talented people you are competing against?

Many start with an “introduction” like: “Blah, blah, I have followed your company for a while, it’s great that you take the green transition seriously, I’ve heard many good things about you and your focus areas, visions, blah, blah.”
Here, they waste the most important seconds without answering the three points I mentioned above. “Tell me something I don’t already know” is an important principle when a salesperson wants to capture attention — especially when you have very little time (maximum 5 seconds!) and are using a medium where only one sense is involved: SIGHT! Therefore, avoid wasting time on small talk that brings nothing new to the reader.
