What do you have on your competence counter?

When you are going to “sell or market” your skills when competing with other well-qualified candidates, the most crucial thing to get you winning is to have a good overview of what you actually know and do! When you have filled in the competence matrix you are now going to get an access to, you will probably realize and be surprised that you know more than you think. The metaphor “competence buffet” is descriptive of the versatility of people’s competence.

What do YOU ​​have on your “competence counter”? Perhaps you have made a good living by selling the most tender steak the recent years. Then it is natural to think that you still will be selling steak. But now the market wants something else. They want gluten-free bread and salad. At this point many people lose themselves. They do not see that they have anything else than steak to offer in their buffet. Perhaps the reason they were chosen as a beef supplier was because of the side dishes in addition to the tender beef. But since the main product was beef, the focus is still on the beef. It is therefore important to redirect the focus on what the next employer wants. Take the blinders off – find out what variety of dishes you have in YOUR buffet.
